Scope and Contents

Weeping Blood Butterflies 泣血蝶双飞 Qi Xue Die Shuang Fe. All music manuscripts were stamped by 莲花曲艺社 Lotus Art Club of Singing. The Story tells that Guan Hanqing, a notable Chinese playwright and poet in Yuan Dynasty, writes a play The Injustice to Dou E (Dou E Yuan) to criticize the corruption of the court. A sing-song girl Zhu Lianxiu stands by him and declares that as long as he dares to write, she dares to perform. Their play infuriates and threatens the Mongol officials. Lord Akham attempts to persuade them to revise the play. However, Guan Hanqing refused and is put in jail with Zhu Lianxiu. Finally, with an official investigation that exposes Lord Akham as corrupt and deserving execution, and a petition signed by more than ten thousand people to spare Guan Hanqing, Lord Horikhoson is eventually persuaded against his better judgment to release Guan Hanqing and allow him to go into exile. Zhu Lianxiu, already spellbound by her love for Guan Hanqing, hopes to join him in exile, but her plea is rejected. The disappointed Guan Hanqing and Zhu Lianxiu thus have to bid farewell to each other, singing a song of butterflies that Guan Hanqing has written in prison to express his love for her.
