Biographical / Historical
This series of photographs spans from at least 1939 to 1949. The first several pages document her student life, during which she graduated from high school, received her BA from Baylor University in Waco, TX, and her master's from Columbia University. Several pages capture her wedding to Hsio Ho Chao in Shanghai and at trip they took to Hangzhou with family soon after. The pages following show the couple with their infant Ted over the first two years of his life. The last pages of the album are mainly pictures of Ho by himself, which he would send with letters (see Ted Chao Collection 2018.002) to Mae and Ted after they left for the U.S. in 1949. Many of the self-portraits are signed "To darling" or "To dearest Mae." As communicated in his letters, Ho was concerned that his son wouldn't know what he looked like after their long separation.
