Abstract

Originally from Wuhan, China, Chen Weng is a Chinese American artist and graphic designer based in Seattle, Washington who created an online comic series called Messycow Comics. Weng published several short comics about the outbreak of COVID-19 during the beginning of the global pandemic, attempting to provide a positive and comedic outlet for her audience during a time of increasing fear and anxiety. During this oral history, she describes her creative process and audience, noting how she uses comedy to better communicate and connect with both her American and Chinese audiences. Weng goes on to explain that her content for each audience varies based on the different cultural context and background that exists for Chinese and American viewers respectively. As a part of the Chinese American community, Weng expresses how alarming its was to learn about the crisis unfolding in China during January and how challenging it was to deal with the knowledge that the pandemic would eventually arrive in the United States. She notes her frustration with the fact that the Chinese American community was unable to effectively warn the American public early and convince people to take the pandemic seriously from the beginning. Weng also discusses the implication of the potential WeChat ban on the Chinese community across the world. Weng talks about disconnecting from social media and focusing on her work, family, and other hobbies to maintain a healthy mentality and life balance. Describing the rise in antagonism against the Asian community since the outbreak of the coronavirus, she cites a lack of mutual understanding and misinformation as the root cause of the current wave of anti-Asian discrimination in America. Weng concludes by explaining that she hopes her comic can help bridge perceived differences between China and America and help both Chinese and American people recognize the common emotions and shared struggles of humanity.
