Abstract

As the Co-Director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, Cynthia Choi and her organization has played an integral role in running the Stop AAPI Hate task force during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout her career, Choi has been working extensively in non-profit sectors focusing on issues ranging from immigrant rights to gender-based violence and reproductive justice. According to Choi, her current organization CAA advocates for systemic changes in the fields of educational equality, immigrant rights, and language access. The rise in anti-Asian discrimination and hate crimes have been a disturbing trend for Choi during the COVID-19 pandemic. While she has not experienced any hate incidents in her personal life, Choi expresses sympathy for the pain and suffering of victims. CAA stepped up to help create the Stop AAPI Hate campaign as a result of this rise in anti-Asian violence. Choi explains that CAA’s unique role in the Stop AAPI Hate campaign revolves around shaping the broader narrative around anti-Asian racism in a way that empowers the Asian American community rather than detract from it. Despite the monumental work of the Stop AAPI Hate, Choi does not believe that hate towards Asian Americans will dissipate any time soon after the pandemic. She explains that the pursuit of racial justice will require solidarity between the Asian American and African American communities, noting how the model minority myth has long been wielded as an instrument of white supremacy and anti-Blackness. On a personal level, Choi’s family motivates her advocacy work, and she hopes to create a better future for her children and community at large.
