Scope and Contents

This collection consists mostly of 78 rpm record albums (102 total) and audio tape reels of Chinese and Japanese music, mostly instrumental. The audio tape reels are duplicates of the record albums. Most of the albums are undated, but the few that do have dates are from the 1950s-1960s. The records include classical, opera, and folk music. In addition, there are a few paper documents and journals, such as a journal in English with an article about ancient Chinese instruments, from 1926; a manuscript in English on the "Twelve Ritual Melodies of the T'ang Dynasty," from 1957; various record album notes (some with musical notations) in Chinese and Japanese; a journal on Japanese music from 1954; and a glossary of Korean music, which is undated. Biographical / Historical

This collection was given to Sharon J. (Sam) Katz by a former neighbor who was a musicologist. Sam Katz donated it to the museum in 1993.

Arrangement

Record albums and tape reels are arranged in chronological order, from 1-102. Paper documents are arranged alphabetically by country, with Chinese-related items first, followed by Japanese and Korean.
