Scope and Contents

This collection consists of items from Evelyn Yee's family. These items include three liberty bonds issued by the Republic of China, one in 1937 and two in 1938. These bonds belonged to her parents when they lived in New York. In addition, there is part of a letter written to Evelyn's mother from her uncle (or another relative) in 1937 about a trip taken from New York to Hong Kong. Finally, there are two record albums in Chinese ("Mothers Teach Children" and "Madame Butterfly") plus record notes, also in Chinese. Biographical / Historical

Evelyn Yee, a Chinese American, was raised in New York, New York, by her father, Joe Kai Yee, and her mother, Margaret Moy Yee. Her mother was born in 1916 in New York's Chinatown, and she was the first of her family to be born in the US. Her father grew up in California but at some point, he lived on Bank Street in the West Village. Evelyn's grandfather came to the US in the early 1900s; his wife joined him later and they eventually had 13 children.

Processing Information

This collection includes three separate donations by the donor, one in 1993, one in 1994, and one in 2012. Since the donation in 2012 was assigned an accession number and the previous ones were not, the entire collection is being represented by 2012.003.
