Coaching books collection

 Collection
Identifier: 2016.002

Scope and Contents

Thus far, this collection contains five coaching books, all in Chinese. One book, written in calligraphy, is for the Tam family. Another book, handwritten, is for the Huang family, possibly for the wife of the person mentioned in the Tam book. Only two books appear to be dated, one of which is from the Toy or Loy Young family; it includes an envelope from an Edmond Toy in Chicago to a Chester Loy Young in Kwangtung, China, and the envelope is postmarked 1947. The other dated book is from 1938 and is completely handwritten. The last book is possibly of the Chan family, Joyce Tsang's mother's family; presumably, Joyce Tsang is this book's donor.

Biographical / Historical

Coaching books were designed to help coach Chinese immigrants coming to the US decades ago. Upon arrival, they faced a rigorous interview process that would determine whether they would be allowed to stay. The books included very detailed questions and answers and many contained maps of the individual's hometowns in China.
