Eric Ng collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of photographs, postcards, glass projection slides, printed materials, and reference materials. Photographs and postcards document the businesses, social environment and development of New York's Chinatown, including inter-ethnic tensions. Printed material include articles, magazines, booklets, and a guidebook about the social history of Chinatowns and the political environment during the Second Sino-Japanese War. There are also menus for Chinese Restaurants in New York City and their accompanying instructional recipe booklets. Publicity materials consist of two calendar pin-ups, trade cards, two songbooks and a Chinese newsclipping about Chinese Opera. The majority of the collection dates from the 1860s through the 1970s.
One of the many highlights of the collection is a letter written and signed in the late 1880s by Journalist Wong Chin Foo, one of the first Chinese-American human rights activists in the U.S, who some credit with coining the term Chinese American.

Biographical / Historical
Eric Y. Ng is a well-known community leader and business man in New York's Chinatown and the 63rd President of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA). Fondly referred to as “Mayor Ng,” he was born in Toishan, China and moved to Hong Kong in 1953. Ng attended Tak Ming Middle School in Hong Kong has served as the President of the Tak Ming Alumni Association in Eastern USA.
Ng is an avid collector of old stamps and envelopes, historical photos and records related to the modern history of Chinese Americans. Ng made his first donation of menus from Chinatown restaurants through the 20th Century in 2006. In November 2015, he donated an extensive collection of historical photographs and vintage postcards that contributes to preserving the history of Chinese Americans. The collection also includes articles from magazines such as The Century, Harper's Weekly, and Leslie's Weekly.
