Scope and Contents

This collection consists of xeroxed background research, correspondences, interview excerpts, audio tapes with full interviews with cast members, and draft and published versions of Hammarstrom's book. The background research contains literature and clippings relating the "Flower Drum Song" shows. The correspondences are between Hammarstrom and the publisher and interviewees. The interview excerpts were intended for usage in the published book.

Biographical / Historical

David Lewis Hammarstrom is an author who conducted research and interviews for his book about the broadway show "Flower Drum Song." The book looks at the original Rogers and Hammerstein production from 1958 and the 2002 revival written by David Henry Hwang. It explores how the perception of the show by the the general public has changed over the years and the revival's chaotic journey to opening night. For his research, Hammarstrom conducted interviews with members of the original and revival cast to recount their experiences in the show.
